Addiction Treatment at Aventa Centre of Excellence for Women with Addiction

Aventa is accredited with Accreditation Canada and is a licensed residential addiction treatment provider under the Alberta Mental Health Services Protection Act.

Aventa provides trauma-informed, gender-specific, concurrent capable, FASD-informed, live-in addiction treatment services for women. Aventa’s programs are abstinence-based and focus on helping women with issues of guilt and shame, assertiveness, sexuality, relationships, self-esteem, life skills, relapse prevention and health. Therapy includes group sessions, individual counselling, peer guidance, and self-reflection. The programs focus on building trauma awareness, increasing understanding of the connection between trauma, mental health and addiction, and developing grounding, coping and relapse prevention skills.

Aventa uses Dr. Stephanie Covington’s model known as “Women’s Integrated Treatment” (WIT). WIT is grounded in theories of addiction, trauma and women’s psychological development. Dr. Stephanie Covington’s (PhD, LCSW), evidence-based curriculums are the foundation of our addiction treatment programs at Aventa Centre of Excellence for Women with Addictions.

Dr. Covington’s curricula are evidence-based and several studies have been conducted illustrating their effectiveness. Dr. Covington’s curriculum, “Helping Women Recover” and “Beyond Trauma”, both utilized at Aventa, were listed on the SAMSHA-sponsored National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices (NREPP). In addition to being an internationally recognized clinician, author, organizational consultant, and lecturer, Dr. Covington is also a woman with lived experience in long-term recovery.

  • Aventa employs a multidisciplinary team of skilled, compassionate Staff with varied education, professional and lived experience. The Clinical Team completes comprehensive ongoing training including Brain Story Certification via the Alberta Family Wellness Initiative.
  • The Aventa Clinical Team is comprised of the Executive Director, Clinical Supervisor (PhD/Registered Psychologist), Clinical Administration Manager, Program Managers, Counsellors and Recovery Support Counsellors and Registered Nurses (RN).
