Aventa Scholarship Award

Aventa Centre of Excellence for Women with Addictions has established an Alumnae Scholarship Award to help women who have chosen to better their lives by continuing their education. This opportunity has been created through the generosity of one of Aventa’s Alumnae who was in recovery for 34 years and passed away in July of 2023, leaving Aventa with a generous gift of $100,000.00. The fund will be supported through our generous donor, and a portion of annual sales through Aventa’s Pop-Up Shop. The operation of the Pop-Up Shop relies on donations, and Alumnae volunteers.

The daughter of our generous Donor shared that her mother was active in her career and an involved and caring mother. She struggled with alcohol abuse until 1989, when she quit drinking, completed treatment at Aventa (The Villa Recovery Centre), and began volunteering. She needed something to keep her grounded and focused on her path of sobriety, which she found in volunteering. She dedicated her life to the service of others, volunteering at several not-for-profit organizations throughout her lifetime. She was a kind and generous woman; in 2017 she donated funds to Aventa to support the renovation of one of our facilities in the community of Cliff Bungalow Mission.

A maximum of twenty awards will be provided annually, each award will be in the amount of $1,500.00. These awards will support Aventa Alumnae pursuing their education which could include upgrading, a diploma, certificate, or a degree in their area of interest. If an Alumnae in recovery for over one year has completed a degree, certificate, or diploma post-treatment and is carrying student loans, an application for debt reduction will be considered. Evidence of outstanding student loans will be required.

To qualify, applicants must be an Alumnae of Aventa, in recovery for a minimum of one year. Alumnae must be serving on a committee or volunteering as a Mentor, Speaker, or Volunteer in our Pop-Up Shop for a total of twenty volunteer hours. Aventa Alumnae volunteering consistently at another not-for-profit organization are eligible to apply. A letter of confirmation of volunteer hours will be required from the organization. Alumnae can submit a new application each year, first-time applicants will be prioritized.

Applications will be received starting December 01, 2024. Applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee; all applicants will be notified monthly. If selected for an Aventa Scholarship Award and the Alumnae is currently in university or school, funding will be paid directly to the institution. If the Aventa Scholarship Award is being utilized to pay down student loans, funding will be paid directly to the Government on behalf of the recipient.

Aventa will provide a T4A tax slip in compliance with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to all successful applicants. T4A tax slip forms will be issued no later than January 31 of each year.

In addition to Aventa’s Scholarship Award, we have a partnership with the Rotary Club of Calgary Heritage Park, that includes two additional grant opportunities for 2025-2026.

Deadline: Applications are due each month by the first of the month.

Aventa Scholarship Award recipients will be notified by the end of each month if they are successful. Not all applicants will be selected for awards. Applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee; all information will remain confidential and will not be shared without your prior permission. General information will be shared during the decision-making process.

Step 1: Eligibility requirements

Are an Alumnae of Aventa or the Villa Recovery Centre and there is evidence of this.
Are in recovery for over one year from the time you graduated from our programs and services.
Meet the criteria regarding participation at Alumnae activities and volunteering.
Are enrolled in, completed, or have been accepted to a vocational/skills training program, an upgrading or ESL program, or an undergraduate or master’s degree program.
Or are in recovery for over one year, and have completed an education program, and are carrying a student loan.
Are motivated to achieve your education and career goals.
Are a volunteer for Aventa or another not for profit organization.
Are not an Aventa employee or member of their immediate family.
